Saïd Business School
University of Oxford

Nicholas Sabin is a DPhil candidate in Management Studies at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, whose work is supported by a Saïd Foundation Scholarship and Templeton DPhil Scholarship. His research interests include economic sociology, social innovation, microfinance, and complex systems. He is supervised Dr. Felix Reed-Tsochas, Co-Director of the CABDyN Complexity Centre.

Nicholas’ research seeks to relate social structure and economic action, in the context of microfinance solidarity groups in developing countries. His aim is to contribute both to the theoretical understanding of human behavior in repeated economic exchanges, and to improve the practical implementation of poverty reduction strategies. Nicholas’ research draws on techniques for the analysis of complex networks and network dynamics in other domains.

Prior to starting his doctorate, Nicholas completed the MSc in Management Research (Distinction) at the Saïd Business School. His MSc dissertation on the subject of “Social Structure and Economic Performance in Microfinance Groups” was an exploratory study of his current DPhil research. Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management from the Wharton School and a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He acquired direct knowledge of how microfinance in developing countries works as a Kiva Fellow in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
