Visiting Fellow of the James Martin Institute: Prof Alan Baker

We are pleased to welcome Alan Baker as a Visiting Fellow of the James Martin Institute. Alan has just arrived in Oxford, and will be based at the CABDyN offices in the Saïd Business School. His research background is in Philosophy and since his PhD, which he completed at Princeton University, he has held academic positions in the U.K, U.S.A, West Africa and Estonia. He arrives in Oxford from Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania where he is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy.

His research interests lie at the intersection between philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of science, with a particular focus on applied mathematics and what the role of mathematics in science can reveal both about the nature of mathematics and the nature of science. He is also interested in philosophical approaches to understanding complexity and emergence, and on the interplay between prediction and explanation in the context of modelling complex systems.

We are delighted that Alan has chosen Oxford as his base during the 2008-9 academic year. Whilst pursuing research and study in complexity, he will be working with CABDyN Co-Director, Felix Reed-Tsochas and other members of the CABDyN Research Cluster and the James Martin Institute.
